Interview with Alysia Rodgers: Acquire Design, Inc.

This freelancer-turned-entrepreneur has found her calling helping business owners, professionals and college students get ahead. Learn how she markets her services and maintains motivation.

In 2008, human services expert and preacher Alysia Rodgers started writing resumes on a freelance basis. Over the next several years, she expanded her services to better help her growing roster of clients. And by 2015, she had begun developing SBA- and lender-ready business plans for other entrepreneurs. Just two years later, Rodgers officially transitioned from freelancer to business owner by founding Acquire Design, Inc., a company specializing in resume writing and editing, business plan development and college essay tutoring.

She explains what made her take the leap, saying, “I was getting results for people and helping people have successes in their businesses. Since I was already generating income from these services, I recognized my place in the market and decided to make it an official business at the end of 2017. I serve many people: entrepreneurs who have business startups, established businesses that never had a business plan, almost anyone in any career, diverse age brackets and many unique business models.”

Because Rodgers allowed her company to develop naturally over time instead of jumping in feet first a decade prior, she was able to start a company with a solid list of clients right out the gate. Yet, she still lists marketing as her biggest struggle. She explains, “It is tricky and a lot of work. I have to use 10 different advertising sites and all social media avenues, including maintaining a presence on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and more. We utilize email marketing and online advertising and find these things to work well for us.”

In addition to email and internet marketing, Rodgers also relies on Wix for her website as well as other tools and tactics. She says, “I love utilizing analytics for my business because it helps me understand where results are coming from. I also love to review the financials to see where we are lacking in terms of production efforts and make changes.”

This entrepreneur’s multiple degrees, years of experience and work ethic act as huge driving forces behind her company’s direction and success. But, she credits her faith and time in ministry as the true motivation behind her work. She elaborates, “I am inspired by my heart for others, my love for God and humanity. I love when I have completed a project and my clients are very happy to have something they could have never achieved alone. I draw a lot of inspiration from my spirituality and belief that no person can accomplish everything on their own. Everyone needs help sometimes.”

Over the course of her career, Rodgers has learned multiple lessons; perhaps most importantly that success requires dedication, hard work and a solid plan. “Being a woman of action and running my business caused me to work more hours, create strategies for success and push the envelope. Don’t give up, create constant strategies, network, know your gift and understand the market and how your product applies to the market,” she advises.
